Imagine walking into a store, convinced you know exactly what you are going to buy. An hour later you leave with something entirely different. The product you have is less expensive, longer lasting, looks and works better, is more beneficial to the environment, supports the local economy, is elegantly suited to its surroundings- and you know it. This was my first experience with Furbish- five years and almost 400,000 SF of specified green-roof later- I have a position at the company. I am delighted to be part of an extraordinary team of dedicated scientists, engineers, builders, designers, operatives, artists, thinkers, doers, makers, and leaders. Being part of a team has always been important to me, and the notion that the collective output from a group is greater than the sum of that group’s members individual output resonates deeply. In baseball terms, I believe a double- play is inherently more beautiful than a home-run. Born in London, I was fortunate to live in seven countries by the time I was 18, and spoke Turkish before English. I have practiced Landscape Architecture in Europe, the Middle-East, Africa, Asia and the Americas. You can find me roaming the highways somewhere between the beautiful little house I share with my gorgeous wife and daughter- and two spoiled mutts- in Washington, DC and our glorious old office in Baltimore.
Favorite things about USA: Right turn on red; world class customer service; an apparent innovation gene in citizens; it’s big.
Favorite things about DC: License plates; Saul Berenson; regulations driving storm water management; 4 seasons; Urban Design done right (generally); Metro to Dulles.
Surprise skill: I make probably the finest Bloody Mary on the planet. (shaken, no ice- obviously)
