Josh Leisenring Josh Leisenring – Horticulturalist

Ever since I was a kid, I have been fascinated by natural systems and the evolving webs of interaction between all of the various communities of organisms that work in concert to create and sustain an ecosystem. I have also always been intrigued by the idea of building and allowing these systems to develop under artificial conditions, from simple terrariums to zoological exhibits to man-made landscapes. During and after earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Natural Resources and a Master’s Degree in Biology, I spent several years working as a field biologist on a variety of conservation focused projects, while my career gradually guided itself towards Horticulture. After first working as an interior plantscape horticulturalist, I ultimately came to manage the plant sections of several large exhibits at the National Aquarium here in Baltimore, including their Greenroof. It was there that I fell in love with Greenroofing, and now as a Horticulturalist with Furbish, I have the opportunity to help develop and manage Greenroofs across the Mid-Atlantic, and do my part to reintroduce functional green spaces back into urban landscapes from which they have been missing. When not experimenting with planting techniques, I can usually be found at home slowly learning to play guitar, rendering something in Photoshop, or building another Poison Dart Frog vivarium.
