National Institute of Health Library

The Green Terrace at the National Institute of Health Library located in Bethesda, Maryland provides guests a space to read, reflect, and rejuvenate. The vegetation, shade structures, outdoor seating, and water feature were all thoughtfully designed to create a space of retreat. The project won the HHS Green Champion Award in 2009 for Sustainable Building Design and the Medical Library Association Green Project of the Year Award (2011). Roughly 30% of the vegetated roof contains plants the NIH is studying for medicinal purposes.
